7 years ago, FEM founders Keith Bookwalter and Ana María González decided to create an organization in which people with more opportunities to educate themselves could share their knowledge with other people with less opportunities. By creating a mechanism to bridge the capacity gap, and improving the quality of profesionals development could not only be accelerated but also enhanced and made more sustainable. Since then we have made over 10 volunteering workshops and calls for capacity building, have over 120 permanent online volunteers worldwide, a group of 14 associates and 2 businesses that make us possible. We work with over 10 prestigious networks (such as Architects without frontiers), 17 Universities in Europe and USA, and 2 international cooperation organizations.
FEM has proudly become and example of what it preaches. The Colombian social intervention ecosystem makes funding hard. In 2014 we launched our first entrepreneurial innovation based on community tourism, Cartagena Insider. Today, Insider pays our office team. And in 2015 we opened our Volunteer Hostel which pays for all our office expenses. Together, Insider and Volunteer Hostel guarantee 40% of FEMs annual budget and makes us self sustainable and independent.
